Ephemeral 2.0 Solo Exhibition Galerie Le Feuvre & Roze, Paris
26.9. – 26.10.2019

This Stohead exhibit, perhaps more than any of those preceding, presents works that elicit questions related to the passage of time. The artist here shares paintings reflective of emotional states, while tactfully giving free rein to the imagination of the beholder. Herein lies the strength of the German artist’s work. Layer upon layer, stroke by stroke, from the densest to the most ethereal, he projects his emotions onto the canvasses, without leaving us feeling crushed by their weight. Hence our minds may focus on what they please while contemplating these pieces, which become tangible matrices for our personal interpretations.
A single work thus becomes a wellspring of myriad emotions, and we alone—through the prism of our mindset, mood, and longings—may interpret it.
A simple wisp against a dark background can be for us an eminently ornamental composition—beautiful, technically ingenious, intriguing. Yet the same diaphanous motif and shadowy backdrop might stir up thoughts on instants in time, thoughts on life. The before, the during, and the after. Before, during, and after what? That’s up to us.
We see the same process unfold in the more colourful pieces. Are we witnessing a momentary explosion of joy? Or do these works implore us to, more generally, take greater advantage of what we are offered?
In Ephemeral 2.0, Stohead, as it is his custom, displays work that has progressed technically and aesthetically, whose world is large enough for our imagination, contemplation, and even introspection.

Roundtrip Solo Exhibition Speerstra Gallery

In his most recent series of paintings, Stohead raises his habitual enigmatic style
to new heights in a round trip. Using a specific type of marker with a round,
multidimensional tip, he produces thick, soft and simple letters, as runny as can
be and indisputable conveyors of the graffiti spirit. Over the last ten years, the
artist has incessantly worked on improving his tool ; he started with tubes of
shoe wax with a sponge tip and then manufactured them according to his own
specifications in different sizes, until they became difficult to handle.
Stohead’s complete opus is based on words or quotes that mirror his mood while
he works. He conscientiously organises his thoughts within a square structure,
where the number of letters per line equates the number of lines.
Nevertheless, Stohead himself never hesitates to shake up these self-imposed
constraints, which is apparent is this series ; we see greater freedom and movement,
greater variety in tracing letters until they seem to float, bounce and
superimpose themselves, thus challenging any notion of a frame. Through the
choice of multiple colours for one word, Stohead takes us away from any notion
of obvious interpretations ; he plays with levels and twists in order to reveal new
perspectives. Without ever forgetting his initial style, the artist has established a
new bridge from graffiti to abstract art and brings an intemporal touch to these
graffiti hieroglyphs.

Recomposition Solo Exhibition Le Feuvre & Roze

RECOMPOSITION catalogue

Stohead gradually takes us from Decomposition to Recomposition.
Today, he is bringing the elements together. Far from being a jumble where calligraphy,
liquid or hazy effects and breaking line are put together, Stohead is proposing
works that have a common characteristic: the search for a new harmony.
It is a balance between his different works, all present in paintings that come
together to form the Recomposition. And paradoxically, it is simplicity that
triumphs here. The rapid movement, uses simple shapes in bright colours that
materialise hours, or even years of thinking, waiting and staring at the painting
to find the right movement.
