PUBLIC LANDMARK
THE PENCIL
2025 // STADTWERKE - HEIDELBERG, GERMANY
With The Pencil, Heidelberg is home to an extraordinary public statement and Germany’s tallest piece of urban art. Located less than a five-minute walk from the main railway station, the 84-meter-high chimney of the municipal utility company in the city center was transformed into an oversized pencil.
Powerful, visionary, and visible from afar. The striking silhouette of the painted chimney now shapes the cityscape, sending a powerful visual signal for contemporary urban culture and transformation.
The artwork has become one of Heidelberg’s new landmarks, symbolizing education, creativity, openness, and cultural progress. Core values of a city that has always connected science and the arts.
This flagship project was realized for the Metropolink Urbanart Festival by a top-tier team of internationally renowned urban artists: Stohead, Case Maclaim, Mina Mania, and Sweetuno.
Using precise technique, color, and typography, they transformed the industrial architecture into an iconic collaborative artwork.
